License Key Issues

Annotations not printing in Adobe Reader

This is not a PDF Studio bug but rather a design issue with Adobe Reader. When you print the document, the default option will not print annotations. You have to specify that you want to print annotations. This is done in the print dialog of Adobe Reader. There is a drop-down box where you can choose to print 'Document & Markups'.

Permission to add annotation / enable annotations in Adobe Reader

PDF Studio can set / reset permission to add annotations to a PDF document. However, this will only allow users to add annotations within a PDF editor such as PDF Studio or Adobe Acrobat, it will not work in Adobe Reader. In the latest version of Adobe Acrobat, it is possible to set another permission to enable annotating documents in Adobe Reader. This is a "hidden" or "internal" permission from Adobe that is not documented in the PDF format. For this reason, PDF Studio can not set this permission.

Text extraction is not working on some files

Some PDF documents do not contain any text information but are simply graphic images. This is the case for instance of PDF documents created from scanned documents. PDF Studio will not be able to extract text on such documents. You will need to find tools that perform OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to get the text from such documents.

Creating PDF documents using PDF Studio

PDF Studio can create PDF documents from paper documents using the scan-to-pdf function. PDF Studio can also convert images in format gif, png, jpeg or tiff format to PDF: you can simply open an image file within PDF Studio and save it as a new PDF file or you can append images as page using the Images -> Import Images as Pages fonction.

However PDF Studio does not provide a PDF printer driver like Adobe does. In general, we found that this is not really needed as most applications these days include a Save As PDF function.

Under Mac, you can simply save a document as PDF from the Print dialog:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1035.html

Under Windows, Microsoft distributes a free add-in to Save As PDF from any Office 2007 application:

Additionally, there are a number of free PDF printer drivers available for download on the internet for instance "CutePDF Writer", PDF995 (this one has limitations). Once installed these printer drivers will show under the list of printers in your print dialog allowing you to save any file to PDF.

Since version 6.2, now that PDF Studio is integrated with Google Docs, it is also possible to convert Microsoft Office documents to PDF using Google Docs conversion services. All this can be done without leaving PDF Studio. Users can simply upload documents to their Google Docs account and then open the documents as PDF in PDF Studio. Choose "Open As PDF" in the righ-click menu (CTRL + click in Mac) after selecting a file in the Google Docs File Manager.
