PDF Studio FAQ

This is the list of frequently asked questions for PDF Studio. If you don't find the answer to your question, don't hesitate to ask us at info@qoppa.com.

Technical Questions

Scanning on Mac OS X

PDF Studio uses TWAIN to communicate with a scanner. TWAIN is a standard framework that is installed by default on Mac OS X and is used so that applications do not have to deal with differences between scanners.

As long as it is possible to scan from other third party applications such as Photoshop Elements, it should be possible for PDF Studio to use your scanner.

Annotations not printing in Adobe Reader

This is not a PDF Studio bug but rather a design issue with Adobe Reader. When you print the document, the default option will not print annotations. You have to specify that you want to print annotations. This is done in the print dialog of Adobe Reader. There is a drop-down box where you can choose to print 'Document & Markups'.

No printers showing on the print dialog under Linux

PDF Studio is a Java application that works with CUPS on Linux to detect and send data to be printed. As such, printers have to be registered with CUPS for them to show on the printer dialog.

Unfortunately, Java has some issues when it works with CUPS and sometimes printers that are registered do not show up anyways. This is a documented problem with Java and there are some workarounds for this:

  • There is an environment variable used by CUPS called CUPS_SERVER. Make sure that this variable is set to "localhost":
    CUPS_SERVER=localhost

  • The setting of the locale can also cause problems. Set the LANG environment variable to "C":

    LANG=C

Permission to add annotations / enable annotations in Adobe Reader

PDF Studio can set / reset permission to add annotations to a PDF document. However, this will only allow users to add annotations within a PDF editor such as PDF Studio or Adobe Acrobat, it will not work in Adobe Reader. In the latest version of Adobe Acrobat, it is possible to set another permission to enable annotating documents in Adobe Reader. This is a "hidden" or "internal" permission from Adobe that is not documented in the PDF format. For this reason, PDF Studio can not set this permission.

Text extraction is not working on some files

Some PDF documents do not contain any text information but are simply graphic images. This is the case for instance of PDF documents created from scanned documents. PDF Studio will not be able to extract text on such documents. You will need to find tools that perform OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to get the text from such documents.
